Last Monday, Dr. Edwin had given our exercise paper back. After that, we had gone through and discussed some of the questions for every set of exercises. Personally, I was very interested to know the themes of this amazing play by Sophocles. This is because when I did write the answer for the theme of Antigone in the exercise, I simply put the theme of free will versus fate and to be truth, I did not really understand the thing I had written. Hehehe…
After struggling to figure out the various themes of Antigone, we, obviously with Dr. Edwin correcting us, had come out with six interesting themes. There are pride, responsibility to family, obedience and loyalty, gender inequality, self determination and sacrifice. The theme of self determination captivated my intention as it is synonymic with Antigone’s personal trait. Her self determination is admirable as she has shown her loyalty and love to her own blood. She has courageously done honourable deed of burying her brother although she knows that death will be her punishment. For that also, she has proved her obedience towards her Gods, and for her, eternal life after death is preferable than living with the guilt for the death.
In contrast to Antigone, Ismene is faint-hearted and submits to the society’s idea that women are weak and cannot be equal to men. She prefers other option from Antigone; she obeys Creon’s law and fervently hopes that the death will forgive her.

Something surprising…..
Like you, I do curious to know about the theme of the play of “Antigone”. The reason that I am so interested to know is because I do not have the idea of the theme of the play in the first place. Furthermore, I wrote the wrong answer in the task which was given by Dr. Edwin. I think this is due to the reason that I do not understand well the play in order to come out with a relevant theme. Furthermore, I am glad that Dr.Edwin discusses the themes of the play with us. I am surprised when I know that gender inequality is one of the themes of the play. It opens up my mind that gender inequality issue was existed in Greek drama. This implies that gender inequality is not something new in the society nowadays. It happens since long time ago. Clearly, man is always domineering in the society. Furthermore, in the play, Ismene perceives women as weak and not able to fight with others. This suggests that women are rather submissive characters throughout the time. Nevertheless, in my opinion, gender inequalities have been highlighted as one of the important issues in the society nowadays. Women’s roles are changing as time goes by and some of them are no longer stay at home and take care of the children. There are many women who are educated as well. As a result, women nowadays will start to know and fight for their rights. In our country, there are many laws which are used to protect women. I strongly believe that women are treated better compared to those days. In spite of that, I feel this issue is an interesting topic to discuss in class. It is because we can see the different point of view from male and female. Moreover, it is good for students to be aware of the issue of gender inequality.
